SHAKERS goal hero Jon Newby reckons the new tactical system Bury boss Andy Preece has introduced is working a treat writes Phil Thorp

The Shakers picked up their fifth point in a week with a 1-1 draw against the Second Division's runaway leaders and form team Reading.

And although it is a system that requires a good deal of hard graft from the former Liverpool striker it does not bother him a bit.

"I think the way the gaffer has us playing at the moment is superb," he declared.

"We try to go to a 3-5-1 when we are defending then 4-3-3 when we attack, with Gareth (Seddon) and George (Clegg) tucking back in and it's proving very effective.

"The two of them are more like wing backs at times and have to work hard but it it gives more protection to the defence.

"Being on my own up front does put pressure on me but I really enjoy the role. It gives me licence to go at the whole of the back four and I prefer to run free at them.

"It's hard work but when you are scoring goals and playing well it's the kind of hard work you enjoy!"

Newby, who joins Gareth Seddon as leading scorer on six goals after Saturday's strike, paid tribute to Sam Collins for the superb ball that picked him out for his goal.

"Sam just saw me out of the corner of his eye and played a great ball in. Fortunately I got a good first touch, the keeper started to come off his line then started to go back and I just slipped it underneath him."
