REGARDING S M Delvard-Hussain's letter in the February 4 edition of the BEN.
Does she do the same sort of college/university hours as a younger student?
How many days a week does she go to Leeds and who covers the cost of travel? Does her husband cover the costs of housing and food?
Young students often have to live away from home with all the inherent costs. Did she have the two part time (38 hours) jobs before restarting her education?
Many young people taking on further education straight from school cannot find work of sufficient pay and flexible hours to fit in with their studies. They don't even get minimum wage in many cases.
If she took advice from the European Working Directives, she would limit herself to 48 hours total "attendance", thus leaving just 10 hours of university study. If younger students did work 38 hours, it would suggest they are not taking a serious view of their studies.
Apart from the obvious question of when she finds time to sleep, I wonder if S M is comparing like with like?
