BOLTON magistrates this afternoon jailed a poll tax defaulter for the first time. Mark Brown, aged 22, was sentenced to 14 days in prison. The court heard that Mr Brown owed £211.29, including £12.50 bailiff's costs. Angry anti-poll tax protesters are planning a campaign to get Mr Brown freed. They say he was living on just £15 a week social security benefit, and should not have been jailed.

Dutchman Mr Heuker has just moved to Little Lever from America, where he worked as a dog catcher in Los Angeles. He said: "One day I was called to a local college where a crocodile had been found in a pond. I had to call in some help and we eventually roped and caged it."

SIR,- I feel I must complain of the decline in the standards of BBC variety. The comics have perfected an obnoxious brand of coarse humour whilst all pseudo-tenors are welcomed as the latest thing in entertainment. Let us set up higher standards in this sphere, and only hope artists can be found to live up to them.
