A JOINER who fell 20ft as he installed guttering above shops in Farnworth escaped with a broken arm.
Jack Dearden, aged 58, was working in Market Street when he slipped down a gap in-between Antique and Modern Furniture and the Victoria Inn.
Firefighters used a ladder to rescue Mr Dearden who was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital where he was treated for a broken arm and released that evening.
Mr Dearden was recovering at his home in Plodder Lane yesterday.
His friend and fellow joiner Robert Dalley said Mr Dearden had called him to help with the work just before the accident happened at around 1pm on Saturday.
Mr Dearden was standing on a reinforced plank between the pub and the shop next door when the accident happened.
"He fell at least 20 feet and I think his injuries could have been much worse. I was relieved when the fire brigade got him out and he managed to walk to the ambulance."
Mr Dearden was putting up guttering over the furniture shop and next door Prezzies and Prizes after being hired by the landlord's agent Harold Hayes.
"He is a very experienced workman. I am glad to hear he is not too badly injured," he said.
