I AGREE wholeheartedly with Cllr Peter Johnston's comments on the proposal to develop a drivethrough McDonald's in the centre of Farnworth.
This is on an existing parking ground and playing field, both of which are well used. He is obviously in touch with his voters when he says there are enough hot food outlets in the area. We do, however, need the parking spaces.
One of the main factors that makes Farnworth attractive to shoppers is the free parking. We should treasure the parking ground. The council's continuing policy to neglect or build on parks and sport grounds is very regrettable.
Obviously if the plan goes ahead it will result in the death of many local businesses which have served the local public well for years.
Incidentally, I sometimes wonder if I am the only person who knows where the boundary between Farnworth and Kearsley lies. Both the parking ground and the football pitch in the plan concerned are in Kearsley, not Farnworth. Longcauseway, Albert Road and Plodder Lane are main roads in Farnworth, the BEN reported them in Kearsley.
I accept that the Kearsley/Farnworth boundary is difficult to notice -- even Farnworth Railway Station is half in Kearsley.
