A MASSIVE clean-up campaign has been welcomed by residents on one of the deprived estates being targeted.

Johnson Fold, the Oldhams and Hall i'th'Wood will get improvements including more CCTV cameras and a graffiti clear-up in the council's Street Works Initiative.

Other projects will include clearing gardens, removing abandoned and burnt out cars quicker, and replacing old or fallen fences.

And residents in Johnson Fold told the BEN that they are looking forward to the improvements.

Andrew Butterworth, aged 32, works as a battery fitter and lives with his wife, Donna, and three children in Shackleton Grove. He said: "This is long overdue. It's a good idea to tidy the gardens because that's one of the first things people look at when they go to an area."

Elaine Jackson, aged 39, of Gisburne Avenue, said: "A lot of driveways need to be improved and they haven't done that in the past."

Paul Wood, aged 48, of Shackleton Grove, added: "If we get more CCTV and security lights people will feel safer walking the streets."

And Sheila Oldham, aged 36, of Moss Bank Way, said: "Vandalism is quite a big problem because the kids haven't got anything to do. A lot of us keep our homes looking nice but others don't and it makes the area look bad."

But some residents said that even though they welcomed the plan it was not the complete answer.

June Wood, aged 43, of Shackleton Grove, said: "The main thing we need is more police on the beat to sort out the kids who hang around on the streets."

And Roland Wilson, 81, of Gisburne Avenue, said parking needed to be tackled.

"I keep asking the council to concrete over grass verges to provide more parking -- it is dangerous with cars parked all along the road."
