BOLTON'S British Legion Club on Chorley New Road went from strength to strength with the granting of their new liquor licence.
In the Spring of 1950 they opened their new Crompton Bar, and between 1955 and 1975, membership was running at more than 1,000.
Mrs M.G. Crompton is pictured at the opening ceremony.
She was the widow of Colonel Crompton, who owned the premises next door which the British Legion was planning to turn into self-contained flats for deserving ex-servicemen.
Before 1950, the club was confined to selling "char and wads" (tea and biscuits) which inevitably restricted its popularity.
