IN an article the BEN drew reference to the reduced number of accidents since St Peter's Way had the speeds reduced and cameras installed, by the start of 2000.
I would like to point out that any figures can not be relied on due to the fact that, for the best part of the years 2000 and 2001, we saw extensive bridge repair work being carried out along St Peter's Way.
There were stretches of the road that were reduced to single file and 40 mile an hour restrictions. Surely this had something to do with the reduction of the number of accidents. If the council wishes to draw comparisons with the number of accidents prior to the advent of the 50mph limit, and the introduction of speed cameras, then surely it would only be correct to do this from the start of this year, 2002.
From the start of this year, now that St Peter's Way is clear of roadworks, is the only way there will be a real figure of the number of accidents to draw fair comparisons to and NOT from the start of 2000.
