A SPORTS pavilion burnt to the ground last night in a suspected arson attack.
More than 20 firefighters were called to the blaze at a Lostock Sports Club Pavilion off Mansell Way, Horwich, at 9.30pm.
The pavilion, which was not insured, used to belong to British Aerospace but former workers have run it since 1998. Crews from Bolton, Atherton, Horwich and Hindley were called to the pavilion, which was used by several football, rugby, cricket and bowls teams.
Members secretary Rodney Fletcher said: "We are devastated. Such a lot of work has gone into it over the years and now we have nothing."
Sub-officer Vinnie Redford said: "It just turned into a huge bonfire, the fire really took hold of the wooden building."
Police are investigating the cause. Anyone who can provide facilities for the teams can ring Mr Fletcher on 698362.
