COUNCIL chiefs in Bury, faced with the chilling thought of dumped fridges and freezers littering the countryside, are speaking out now to quash rumours.
Currently, because of legal requirements, it costs £25 to store, de-gas and remove the lining from each refrigerator and freezer which is no longer required by its owner.
However, Bury Metro is keen to stress that they will bear that cost.
Since January 1 this year the EU has made it illegal to dispose of old fridges and freezers in traditional landfill sites or to have them crushed by scrap metal merchants.
The directive is designed to protect the environment from the ozone destroying chlorinated fluoro-carbon (CFC) gases which are released when the appliances are dismantled. Now special techniques have to be employed to extract the CFCs and prevent them being released into the atmosphere.
