WANDERERS drew 1-1 away at Plymouth Argyle to stay third in the second division.
It was an eventful match for Chorley-born Plymouth player Paul Mariner as he opened the scoring for Plymouth, only for him to divert a Sam Allardyce header into his own net. In the Manchester derby United come from behind to beat bitter rivals City 3-1 at Maine Road.

BOLTON were held to a 1-1 home draw by Wigan, while finding themselves in the midst of an injury crisis. A bizarre Tony Kelly own goal gave Wigan the lead with Bolton being saved by a 30-yard screamer from local boy Julian Darby. Manchester United continued to lead the first division with a 5-0 thumping of Luton Town, and current Bolton star Colin Hendry scored a late winner from the subs' bench for Manchester City at home to West Ham.
5 YEARS AGO: September 23, 1996
WANDERERS maintained the lead of the first division with a 4-2 win over Bradford City. Per Frandsen scored one goal with Nathan Blake putting in a man of the match performance adding two more as well as setting up the other goals. Bolton and Blake's magnificent start to the season prompted John McGinlay to say: "I'm not in the least bit worried about not scoring. At the moment there's no bother because we're playing very well and Nathan's knocking them in."
