Wanderers remained fourth in the Second Division table following a 1-0 win over Bristol Rovers at Burnden.
It was a hard-fought game with the only goal of the match coming fropm the penalty spot as Paul Jones converted a 50th minute spot kick after Steve Taylor had been brought down. Meanwhile, Wanderers had a bid turned down by Plymouth for Chorley born Paul Mariner. The striker was also being watched by Ipswich boss Bobby Robson and West Ham's Ron Greenwood with the Portman Road club the favourite to land him in a £200,000 deal.

WANDERERS suffered their third defeat of the season, losing 2-0 to Stoke City at the Victoria Ground.
It was an unhappy day for Wanderers, who never threatened in front of goal. Manager Phil Neal had returned after a coaching stint with the England under 21s and how he would have loved to have had a couple of strikers from that squad in his side, namely Alan Shearer, who had just been signed by Kenny Dalglish for Blackburn, and Kevin Campbell.

THERE was a partial eclipse of the sun over Burnden Park while Wanderers overshadowed Oldham Athletic 3-1.
That showed precisely why the two sides were poles apart in the table, Wanderers back on top after being dislodged overnight by Norwich's victory over Ipswich while Oldham were stuck at the bottom. Michael Johansen gave Wanderers the lead after seven minutes before a John McGinlay double put them 3-0 up after only 31 minutes.
