A MAN who paid £750 for a car worth about £10,000 has admitted dishonestly receiving stolen goods. Paul Haynes pleaded guilty to dishonestly receiving the V-reg Alfa Romeo.
Bury magistrates heard that Haynes, aged 29, Rowsley Road, Stretford, was arrested by police during a routine check in the Bridge Hall Lane area of Bury.
Police found that there were discrepencies with the registration number and checks were made on the chassis number. As a result Haynes was arrested. Further checks revealed that the car had been stolen during a burglary in the Chorley area and false plates had been fitted.
Haynes, who had been driving around in the car for about four months, told police he had been drinking in a Middleton pub when he was asked if he was interested in buying the car. Although he knew there was something strange about the sale he bought it anyway.
Haynes was given a 240 hour community punishment sentence.
