BOLTON Harriers Elizabeth Holt and Katie Smith scored superb individual victories in the Bob's Brew cross-country races at Horwich last weekend featuring races for Under 9s-15s.
It was in the Under 15s that Smith, so dominant in the Red Rose League before Christmas, pulled off another fine win. Her ever-improving Under 13 teammate Holt was equally impressive with an 11-second victory in her race.
There was also a third place for Stephen Wibberley in the Under 15 boys and top-ten finishes for Martin Gundy (8th Under 11) and Adam Grady and Louis Higginson (6th and 9th Under 13).
Nick Kay also gave an excellent performance in the Under 20 men's race. His 36th place is all the better given that he is only in the first of three years in this age-group. For Tom Lancashire however, a place in the 20s was a disappointment.
Hazel jumps to new lengths
HAZEL Carwardine enhanced her reputation as one of the UK's leading triple jump stars last weekend. The Bolton Harrier was invited to compete against an international field at the prestigious Birmingham Games at the National Indoor Arena.
Hazel proved her aptitude for the big occasion by jumping a magnificent personal best of 12.17 metres. This gave her an excellent fourth place against eight other top-class competitors from France Italy and Norway. Currently ranked second Under 23 in the country, the Northern Champion is well on course to achieve her aim of a GB Under 23 vest outdoors this summer.
