AFTER reading about the proposed development of the site of the former Lido Cinema on Bradshawgate, I couldn't avoid a nostalgic twinge as I thought of the last of Bolton's leading cinemas now awaiting possible demolition.
We are urged to move with the times, follow the march of progress, but it is still sad to see the demise of these atmospheric Art Deco style buildings. Built in the 1930s, their bright facades and foyers once adorned our town, a welcoming invitation to the attractions within.
I understand that, elsewhere, some old cinemas have been upgraded and become listed buildings, although used for other purposes.
The Odeon, as it was, the Capitol, now the Lido, to mention a few of our bygone cinemas, are part of our local history. I would love to see our old Odeon with a face-lift, restored to its former glory!
