He was doing well against his old club before limping off

Man of the Match

MIKE WHITLOW

AT a time when high-profile, continental imports are dominating the headlines it was uplifting to see such a down to earth, home grown product play such a pivotal role in securing a clean sheet and, ultimately, a point. Untroubled by the conditions or the Saints' attackers.

Magic Moment

PAUL Jones' save from Djorkaeff's early header was impressive but it was bettered when he went full length to keep out Stig Tofting's fierce free-kick that took a wicked deflection.

Moan of the Match

IT was beyond anyone's control but the elements - a biting, blustery wind then driving rain - wrecked any chance of this "six-pointer" being anything but a dour, close-fought affair offering anything more than the odd flash of skill.

KICK BY KICK

15 mins: Djorkaeff meets Charlton's well-placed cross with a firm header but Jones reacts well to tip the ball over.

18 mins: Djorkaeff tries his luck again but is off balance and his speculative shot flies high into the stand.

21 mins: Gardner delivers the cross but Ricketts delays his shot and a good chance goes begging.

29 mins: Jones defies Wanderers again, going full length to save Tofting's powerful, deflected free kick.

30 mins: Saints raid on the right and Ormerod has a chance until Bergsson steps in with a textbook tackle.

34 mins: Djorkaeff at his best, linking with Charlton and Ricketts before unleashing a shot that deflects off target.

Half-time: Saints 0, Wanderers 0.

52 mins: Fernandes misses the chance of the match, shooting wide after Svensson and Marsden manufacture the opening.

56 mins: Bridge threatens but N'Gotty stops the new England man in his tracks with a breathtakingly brilliant tackle.

63 mins: The alarm bells sound again but Ormerod hits the side-netting after Svensson's smart lay-off.

67 mins: Fernandes is on target but he is frustrated again as Jaaskelainen gets down to save his low shot.

68 mins: Ormerod gets behind Nolan to meet Dodd's cross but his header is off target.

72 mins: Jaaskelainen smothers Tessem's close-range effort after Bridge gets away from N'Gotty on the left.

87 mins: Espertaro's clever through ball gives Wallace a sight of goal but defenders quickly converge and shut the door.

88 mins: Tessem hits his free kick high and wide as Saints are given a late chance to snatch the points.

Full-time: Saints 0, Wanderers 0.
