EX-HOUGHTON Weaver Norman Prince is singing the praises of Bolton people, confident that the town will raise the remaining £650,000 to build a better cardiac support unit.

As patron of the Bolton Cardiac Support Group, Mr Prince has backed the Coronary Care Appeal -- the BEN's adopted charity for 2002.

BEN readers will already be aware that we are trying to reach a £1 million target to build a bigger heart unit at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Mr Prince, speaking at the launch of the appeal at The Reebok, said:"It is about the people of Bolton. The town prides itself in its commuunity spirit and I am confident we will reach this target.

" We have to do this together."

But the appeal now needs YOU.

Firms are being urged to follow the BEN's lead and adopt the charity as their cause for 2002.

But how can you help?

Jenny Walsh, appeal manager said: "We are grateful for any help you can give, however large or small and would appreciate your help in spreading the word about the appeal to family, friends and neighbours.

"We are willing to come out and talk to firms and companies who would like to organise a big event.

"If you would like to run the marathon, climb the Three Peaks, swim the Channel or any other activity to raise money on our behalf, please contact us."

Schools are being urged to get on board by staging various events to help Bolton people with heart disease -- and to build a future for the town.

Non uniform days are a great way of bringing in money.

Sports clubs and pubs are also urged to get behind the appeal by holding sportsmans dinners and sponsored soccer matches and events.

Firms and companies are also being asked to give generously.

Local businesses did come under a barrage of criticism from former appeal chairman Tom Warburton 30 years ago when the first Coronary Heart Appeal was launched.

Mr Warburton accused businesses of turning their backs on Bolton's community.

Firms are now being asked to get employees involved in charity abseils, sponsored stamina events and lunch-time raffles and sales.

Could your church hold a jumble sale or spring/summer garden party?

Drama groups could hold a charity production with proceeds going towards building a 10-bed unit with hi-tech equipment to save lives.

Donations of more than £5,000 will be recognised on a permanent roll of honour in the CCU.
