AMBITIOUS plans to rejuvenate Prestwich Village are set to swing into action in the next few days.

Re-construction of the existing car park at the Longfield Centre and work along Poppythorn Lane will create improved pedestrian links between the shopping area and Metrolink Station in what will be the first phase of a series of improvements.

The scheme will include footway and carriageway improvements together with street lighting, additional landscaping and drainage works.

Prestwich Area Board chairman Councillor Gill Campbell said: "This first phase will significantly improve the quality of the pedestrian environment and is part of a series of changes scheduled to take place over the next two years.

"The other phases to follow will include the improvement of the Village Square and the Longfield Centre walkways as well as Bury New Road.

"There has been a lot of discussion about what needs to be done in Prestwich. It is good to now see the work begin."

The first phase of work is being funded through the North West Development Agency and Bury Council and is expected to be completed by July.

While the work is done at least half of the car park will remain open at all times and alternative car parking will be available on Fairfax Road.

Full details of the scheme are on display at Prestwich Library.
