Fir Tree spark cup upset

DIVISION Two leaders Howe Bridge Mills stirring run in the Leigh League's Davenport Cup hit a brick wall against Fir Tree Rangers.

The side currently next to bottom of Division One shook off disappointing league form scoring three goals in 17 second half minutes to win a place in the last four. Mark Fielding netted twice on 53 and 72 minutes sandwiched around Danny Laycock's 70th minute strike.

In the Redwaters Coronation Cup the Round One tie between Horns Inn and Fir Tree Rangers finally went ahead with the home side just scraping through 4-3. Andy Tipping two, Aiden Lavery and Gary Yates one each with Mick and John McNally and Tony Parkinson replying for Fir Tree.

In Round Two Higher Fold breezed through with a 5-0 away win at Courts, Neil Clayton finding form again with four goals and Warren Knowles getting in on the act with one. The quarter final of the same competition saw Courts win through with a 5-1 home victory over AFC Limelight, Tony Boardman getting a hat-trick and Matt Disley a brace.
