WHEN I first came to Little Lever 38 years ago, we had a policeman on the beat. I can't remember his surname, everyone knew him as "Ronnie".
The kids had great respect for him, as they knew if they were caught doing wrong he would give them a clip round the ear. They didn't dare go home complaining about this, as they would probably have got another. It didn't do them any harm and parents knew it.
Some kids broke a window in a small grocers on Coronation Square by accident, they didn't run away but went to the police station to tell Ronnie. Today that shop would probably have been robbed.
They were definitely the "Good Old Days".
