FIREFIGHTERS were called to seven car fires throughout the Bolton area last night.

The fire crews were sent to incidents in Astley Bridge, Tonge Moor, Tyldesley and two blazes in Little Hulton.

Almost all of the cars, which are believed to have been stolen, were destroyed.

A Cavalier at a car compound in Eckersley Road, Halliwell, suffered damage to the dashboard after raiders broke into the yard and set light to the scrap vehicle.

An Astra van in Eccleston Avenue, Tonge Moor, was also saved from being severely damaged after its windscreen blades burst into flames.

Youngsters are believed to have set fire to newspaper which had been left on the windscreen of the van.

Sub officer Neil Mercer, of Farnworth fire station, said: "We need to get the message across that while we're busy putting out car fires, someone could desperately need our help.

"I would urge people to keep an eye out for abandoned cars and anyone messing about with them."
