POLICE are investigating after a man was found dead in a canal in Leigh.
The body was found at about 8.30am yesterday under a bridge on St Helens Road, known locally as Leigh Bridge.
Police are still trying to identify the man and have made an appeal to the public for help.
He is described as white, 6ft tall, of medium build, between 40 and 50 years old with short dark hair which is greying.
The man was wearing a grey top with red under the collar and a red stripe across the front left side of the chest. It was emblazoned with the logo Mercedes Benz.
He was also dressed in blue trousers, brown shoes and dark socks. He was wearing a small lapel badge which said GMB Lancashire.
Police investigating the incident have yet to reveal if they are treating the incident as suspicious.
