A TEENAGER has picked up a prestigious award for devoting his time to youngsters.

Chris Hayes, aged 17, has been visiting the Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club since he was 10-years-old and he recently started to give up his spare time to organise activities.

He received a Cup of Kindness from the Rotary Club of Bolton Le Moors - an award given to people who have made exceptional contributions to the well being of others without receiving any material benefit in return.

The former Harper Green pupil who lives in Farnworth was nominated by youth club manager Phil Marsh.

Mr Marsh said: "Chris' contribution to the Lads' and Girls' Club has been first class. He has matured quickly and puts in a lot of hard work."

Chris works at least three evenings each week at the Club. He plans to work in IT.

He said: "I was really surprised when I was told I'd won the award. I didn't expect it at all but I'm really pleased.

"I just love working there because it's so much fun."

Chris has helped to organise discos, theatre visits and residential weekends in the Lake District and Wales.

He was handed the award by Bolton Le Moors Rotary Club president Roy Gibbins.

David Kemp, who looks after volunteers at the Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club, said Chris deserved to pick up the award.

He believed the teenager had demonstrated great consideration for others.

"Chris became a member as a young lad and, like many others, he decided to become a helper," he said.

"He's done a wonderful job for us and we think it's marvellous his work has been recognised in this way."

The club is currently looking for more volunteers. Telephone 01204 435363.
