IF Sebastien Schemmel thought his absence through injury would save him from paying a friendly debt, he can think again.

The Hammers' French defender was due to have his head shaved after betting Trevor Sinclair he would not score against Sunderland.

The England wide man duly obliged in the 3-0 hammering of Peter Reid's Black Cats but Schemmel, injured in the next game, went to France for a break with his locks intact, hoping his pals might conveniently forget the wager.

No chance! "We haven't forgotten, and he knows what is in store for him," Sinclair said as the Frenchman returned to face the music.

Schemmel, it appears, is less of a sport than good old Mark Lawrenson who was today honouring his bet with Wanderers' fans and having his famous moustache shaved off. Despite Sinclair insisting his bet was for a "full military headshave", he reckons a light trim should suffice.

"I am definitely not getting my hair shaved because it is important to me - but just a little bit for charity is not a problem." he says coyly.

However severe the crop, the Bobby Moore fund to aid cancer research looks like benefitting.

"I am happy to do it for the Bobby Moore fund," Schemmel says. "I don't know if someone wants to buy my hair for a few pounds but, whatever we raise will be important," he says.

"It is a good opportunity to help them, and that is the main thing."
