UNEMPLOYMENT figures were up by 5,400 in April, according to the Office for National Statistics.
The steady loss of manufacturing jobs also continued. The number of people claiming unemployement benefits stood at 953,000 in April, the highest figure of the year, giving a jobless rate of 3.2 per cent.
