CAN we allow the threatened eviction of a very hard-working farmer? Arnold Davenport has farmed at Nab Gate for over 40 years.

Not only was he hard-working, but he helped stranded motorists stuck in the snow in bad winters, pulling them out with his tractor.

He has kept the farm in immaculate condition. The fields are a credit to him.

When the councillors visited his farm, they likened it to a Constable painting. He has farmed organically all this time.

When Arnold agreed for Chris Holt to take two fields for the golf extension of Breightmet Golf Club, he, and we, were told that it would remain a working farm. Now we are told that this land is wanted to develop into dwellings.

Arnold has offered to buy the farm at the going rate, but this has been rejected. Arnold is still carrying on with all this pressure. I wonder how the golf club members think about being part of the demise of Nab Gate Farm? Surely Harwood's last remaining farm should be allowed to continue until Arnold is unfit to carry on? He is a sprightly 50-something. Don't let this happen and support a hard-working farmer, as they are now few and far between in this area.
