IT was a day of disappointment for Bolton Wanderers Ladies as they just missed out on the title and promotion to the Northern Combination, losing at home to league leaders Liverpool Feds.

A win for Bolton would have seen them leapfrog their opponents to the top of the North West Women's Regional League Premier Division.

Wanderers started the match brightly and kept Feds pinned in their own half for long spells, but the breakthrough they needed just wouldn't come. Instead, on thirty minutes, a missed clearance just inside the Bolton half left a Feds forward clear and she lifted the ball high over the advancing keeper to drop just under the bar.

Bolton now needed two goals to win the title, and the loss of Ann Marie Taylor through injury early in the second half did not help their cause. Bolton continued to press forward, carving out a number of chances, but with the Feds keeper blocking and saving well, time began to run out.

Liverpool Feds, who had not threatened the Bolton goal during the second half, clinched the match just minutes before the end when a forward nipped in between defender and keeper to just flick the ball into the net with her head.
