A SCHOOL is celebrating achieving the highest OFSTED rating possible -- six years after it was almost written-off by education inspectors.

In 1996 only 28 per cent of pupils at New Wellington School in Timperley, Greater Manchester, achieved five or more GCSE passes -- but now the figure is 54 per cent.

The dramatic turnaround in its reputation means the school is now three times over-subscribed.

The OFSTED inspectors rated the school as "excellent".
