On Sunday, the competitors in the club's Eddie Morgan Shield, enjoyed eight hours of bowling in glorious sunshine in Leverhulme Park. It is a pair's event and the standard of bowling was extremely high throughout the day. A good many members stayed to watch the thrilling semi-finals:
In the game between Sue Kitson, Stephen Hemsley and Albert Maddrell, Allan Bristow - Sue appeared to be somewhat 'burned out' and later admitted that it was the worst she had bowled all day. Her partner Stephen was unable to make up for the shortfall and they lost the game by four shots.
In the other semi-final between Rhys Vaughan, Mervyn Gordon and Norman Tickle, Graham Booth it was a huge blunder by Mervyn that lost them the match. Rhys and Mervyn were winning the match by three shots as they went on to play the last end. With just one bowl each to play and 'shot' against him Graham bowled a well-weighted wood into the head and miraculously managed to get the three shots need for a draw 2/3 and an extra end. It was probably the shock of that outcome that made Mervyn forget he had the very last wood to play, and every chance of retrieving the situation. Instead, he began to concede shots by removing woods from the head.
With the score now 6-6 they had to play an extra end. Rhys and Mervyn were unable to compose themselves and their previous form deserted them. Norman and Graham won the game by two shots and now go through to play Albert and Allan in the Final in September
Once again the club is offering free Taster Sessions every Wednesday afternoon starting this week - 8th May. For more details ring 01204 841979 or simply turn up at the club at the Darcy Lever end of Leverhulme Park at 1.00pm
