A THUG who left a security guard with permanent brain damage in a violent robbery has been jailed for 12 years.
Bolton man Richard Lee, aged 54, had to fight for his life after he was attacked by 25-year-old Scott Dyson at the Lumns Lane tip in Clifton.
The victim's bloodied and unconscious body was found the following morning by staff arriving at work.
As a result of the attack, Mr Lee sustained permanent brain damage and now requires 24 hour care. He will never make a full recovery.
Dyson, of Agecroft, was found guilty at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, and sentenced to 12 years for causing grievous bodily harm with intent, five years for robbery and 12 months for four counts of theft. Det Chief Insp Andy Durkin, from Swinton CID, called Dyson a "callous attacker" and thanked people who had the courage to give evidence against him following the incident last April.
He added: "It has been a phenomenal effort from everyone
involved." Commenting after the verdict, Mr Lee's sister, June Molyneux, from Bolton, said: "I'm so frustrated by what's happened to Rick, as a direct result of Dyson, he will never have a normal life."
She added: "Occasionally he'll still get up in the middle of the night and try to leave the house, he's confused and thinks he still works as a security guard.
"I wish I could turn the clock back but we just have to carry on, I'll never have my brother back and that's sad.
"Dyson may have been imprisoned today, but my brother got a life sentence that night."
Mr Lee, who now lives in Duke Street, Heywood, has returned to work for three days a week. He makes bird tables and other wooden items and needs to be constantly watched.
