Westhoughton'S new mayor, Cllr Jo Worthington, got her fund-raising efforts off to a flying start just a few hours after her appointment.

She collected more than £400 during a raffle at the Greenfields Private Members Club following her inauguration at Westhoughton Town Hall.

Cllr Worthington, who has served the Daisy Hill ward for three years, has promised to raise even more cash for her chosen charities with the help of her escort, Arthur Tasker.

She said: "I plan to work very hard to raise as much as I can for Derian House and for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. I am also going to try to give Westhoughton Carnival a boost as well."

Cllr Worthington has replaced Cllr Brian Clare as mayor. He and his wife, Annie, have raised more than £10,000 for the gene therapy unit at the Christie Hospital during the last year.

He said: "We have made many new friends this year and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I would like to thank the people of Westhoughton for their support."
