A CRIMINAL'S attempt to hit three policemen with a block of wood were avoided when they wrestled him to the ground using brute force.

Members of the Tactical Aid Unit bellowed orders at the officer before rushing at him with a shield.

After a brief stand-off involving the four he was disarmed and handcuffed.

But instead of being led away to the cells, he was released and asked by the officers to do it again -- because the "criminal" was a police officer.

The four policemen were taking part in a tactical aid demonstration during an open day at Astley Bridge police station.

Hundreds of people wandered around behind the scenes at the Crompton Way police station yesterday as the police threw open their doors to the public.

Among the main attractions were demonstrations from the Fingerprint Unit and the Area Operations Room, which showed how the force deals with thousands of 999 and non-emergency calls.

The police cells and custody suite were open. Some children put on police helmets and armoured gear.

Sgt Simon Wilkinson, from the Tyldesley-based Tactical Aid Unit, said: "We've had a lot of interest from people wanting to see the sort of work we do. I think some people's eyes have been opened."

The Greater Mancheseter Police band used the day to showcase a new piece of music, called "Going the Extra Mile", specially written for the Commonwealth Games.

It is the first piece of music composed by the newly-appointed director of music, Geoff Williams.

Chief Superintendent Mel Pelham, divisional commander of Bolton police, said: "The open day provided members of the public with an invaluable insight into the police service."
