WANDERERS star Kevin Nolan believes football's future security lies in clubs supporting grass roots soccer.
The midfielder believes Premiership and Football League teams should be built on a platform of local talent.
And he has pledged his own backing to helping youngsters improve their soccer skills.
He said: "Young players are very important for the future of clubs and it's fantastic when you see players rise through the ranks to play in the first team.
"Some of the kids you see knocking a ball about in parks or for local amateur teams will end up being the stars of the future.
"I would like to help in any way I can, time permitting."
Nolan spoke during an appearance at the Little Lever Sports Club Gala on playing fields off Mytham Road.
He had watched youngsters play football and had signed autographs for fans.
He said: "They may be playing alongside me in the future."
Gala chairman Alec Bingham, aged 46, said: "The gala is an important day for us because it raises much needed support.
"Kevin Nolan's comments were very much appreciated. We need people like him to raise awareness of how important grass roots football is."
