THRILLS, spills and metal crunching excitement have brought a new look to Sunday afternoons in Bolton. Stock car racing at the town's greyhound stadium seems set to become a considerable tourist attraction following yesterday's successful pilot meeting. Bolton Auto Speedway attracted more than 1,500 people to watch a programme of hot rod and banger racing on a new track. Next weekend between 4,500 and 5,000 are expected from all over the country to support the powerful 7 litre Formula One cars.

VILLAGERS at Egerton are upset over a council decision to make their friendly parks attendants redundant this summer. Retired driver Mr Bill Jones, aged 74, has been running the bowling and tennis activities at Egerton Park for the past four years. But he and about 30 other pensioners who have been taking on the 26-week a year job have been told their services are no longer required. The council says that now only people under 65 will be taken on.

IN a Bolton school this week, a class of 11-year-olds was asked to give a sentence embodying the meaning of "a singular mode of address". The following was one of the answers: "Bachelors have special buttons for their suits."
BRITISH star Vivien Leigh, as the faded beauty of "A Streetcar Named Desire", and Humphrey Bogart, as the gin-loving vagabond in "Africa Queen", carried off Hollywood's top acting awards, Oscars, last night.

From the Evening News, March 23, 1902
AN alarming epidemic of diptheria is reported from the village of Adlington. The disease broke out during last week, and up to the present between fifty and sixty cases have been notified, of which three have proved fatal. Several cases have been removed to Chorley Joint Hospital at Heath Charnock, and the cause of the outbreak has been traced to defective drainage. In several cases, preventative serum has been successfully used.
