DOG owners, DIY enthusiasts and car stereo fanatics are being urged to keep the noise down as part of a national campaign.
More than 200 local authorities, including Bolton, are holding events to mark National Noise Action, co-ordinated by the National Society for Clean Air and Environmental Protection. The society says that excessive noise can cause disruption and distress to people at home and work and affects everyone's quality of life. It held a national quiet day yesterday.
Environmental officers from Bolton Council will be visiting schools in June to raise awareness of the nuisance that noise can cause.
The NSCA will also be publishing new research on noise complaints and noise management to coincide with its campaign.
Environment minister Michael Meacher encouraged the public to get involved in activities promoting practical solutions to common noise problems. These include noise from neighbours watching television or using loud DIY equipment, dogs left on their own barking and loud music from parties and car stereos.
