AMATEUR artist Granville Martlew has only ever painted one portrait in his life -- but it has pride of place in a Bolton hotel.

The general handyman and caretaker at the Pack Horse in the town centre for the last 32 years painted a picture of the Queen in 1979.

The then-manager of the hotel specially commissioned the work. And the resulting portrait in oils of Her Majesty in her Coronation robes was displayed at the Bradshawgate building for four years.

Then, for reasons unknown, it was relegated to the workshops where it has remained for nearly 20 years.

But now, especially for the Jubilee celebrations, the portrait has been dusted down, and given pride of place in the hotel's splendid Oak Room.

Mr Martlew, aged 58, from Over Hulton, explained: "I have painted and sold landscapes, cottages and local scenery all my life, but I never expected my first and last portrait to have a second airing. I am absolutely delighted."
