Developers are hoping to start work on the site at Springfield - close to the St. Peter's Way and Lower Bridgeman Street junction - by the end of this year. Bolton Council chiefs were today claiming that it could be the first sign that Bolton is bouncing back from recession.

EARLY retirement and a shorter working week were becoming essential in Britain, with more than 1,350,000 unemployed, Mr Jack Jones, the Transport workers leader said today. He said that he did not expect the retirement age to be reduced immediately to 60. "What we are talking about is a staged reduction", he said, adding that increased pensions would have to be the first priority. He said the basic state pension for a married couple should be half of the national average earnings, and for a single person at least a third.

SIR,- Is it in order for people to jump on a bus that has been declared full by the conductor? This happened to the last No 48 bus on a recent evening. The bus left several people at the Moor-lane stop. After it had gone a few yards on jumped three people, including a policeman and a car park attendant, all standing on the platform. Have these people the authority to take this unfair advantage over other intending passengers? This happens very often on this route. Yours, Fair Play.
