PARENTS are being taught vital life-saving skills in a new drive to prevent tragedies happening at home.

Home-Start Bolton teamed up with the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service to show parents what to do if their child falls, starts choking or even stops breathing.

Eddie Barlow, GMAS community liaison manager said: "When a child is hurt or stops breathing, those first few minutes while an ambulance is on the way can be crucial.

"Although hopefully no parent will ever have to deal with such a situation, it is important that they know what to do if it does happen." Home-Start is a voluntary organisation offering support, friendship and practical help to families with children under five years old.

As well as visiting families in their homes, parents can attend weekly support groups where they can learn skills that can benefit their children.

GMAS visited Ashness Community Centre, Breightmet, as part of its accident prevention work involving community groups throughout the region. Home Start Bolton can be contacted on (01204) 362786.
