SCHOOLS in Bolton will be raising the roof thanks to a £500,000 repairs initiative.
At least 10 schools will benefit from the cash for building improvements with some schools having their flat roofs replaced by pitched ones to give them a longer life. Many of the chosen schools are in desperate need of the repair fund, which has come from the Government's New Deal for Schools programme as well as the council's coffers.
Finishing touches are also being put to a council programme to replace school boilers and outdated heaters with energy efficient systems.
The schools most in need of roof repairs are Church Road Primary, Devonshire Road Primary, High Lawn Primary, Sunning Hill Primary, Brandwood Primary, Lostock Primary, Harper Green Secondary, Smithills Secondary, Withins Secondary and Sharples Secondary.
Executive member for education at Bolton Council, Linda Thomas, said: "We are investing in schools and attacking the problems that stop children from learning and teachers from teaching.
"We also have a further £1.2m from the Government's Modernisation Fund to use this year on repair work."
