CHORLEY Borough Council is getting tougher in its fight to beat fraudsters.
Council chiefs have just approved a new policy which will mean people who obtain cash they are not entitled to will face tougher penalties.
As well as the possibility of prosecution, those who make fraudulent claims for Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit, risk a financial penalty equivalent to 30 per cent of the amount overpaid.
Chorley council leader, Councillor John Wilson, said: "The council is keen to ensure those who are entitled to benefits receive them.
"But we will not tolerate individuals who try to cheat the system."
