CHORLEY'S new mayor celebrated becoming the town's first citizen in style -- taking the first waltz at an inaugural dinner.

Councillor Ray Parr attended the event on Friday, May 17, hosted by the council to welcome him into his 12-month term. Invited guests, including dignitaries from the church, Lancashire County Council, the police, fire service and health authority, watched as Coun Parr delivered his speech, before he and his wife, Dorothy, took to the dance floor, followed closely by the new mayoress, Coun Parr's daughter-in-law Carol and her husband, Stephen.

Then, on Sunday, May 19, the mayor and mayoress paraded through Chorley to celebrate his first church service.

They marched along Market Street and into St Laurence's Parish Church for the service conducted by the mayoral chaplain Reverend John Cree.

The town's MP Lindsay Hoyle and local council leader Jack Wilson attended the service along with former mayors and council officers. Also parading were youth groups including Chorley Scouts, Guides, St George's Pipe Band, the Air Training Corps and the TA.
