A FOOTBALL fan hopes to hit the right note in a television show -- in a bid to win a ticket to travel to Korea and Japan for the World Cup.

Steve Wood hopes his music skills will impress the judges on a live television show where the contestants are competing for a ticket to watch the tournament.

Steve who plays the euphonium in Sheffield Wednesday's Kop Band, is hoping to claim a free plane seat.

The 38-year-old, who was born and bred in Bolton, is the only band member of the soccer club band likely to miss out on a trip to the Far East because he is unable to afford a ticket.

He feels that England's chances could be damaged if his other band members are left to provide their musical support at the games without him.

Business Studies teacher Steve and his pals follow England as they play around the world.

Steve, who now lives in Yorkshire, is pinning his hopes on winning a ticket on offer in the ITV1 programme Your World Cup Pitch.

He has already competed against 700 contestants to appear on the programme but now he has to convince judges that he is worthy of travelling abroad to watch the country's footballers make their mark on world soccer.

Viewers will be able to see Steve on TV at midnight tonight before being able to vote in a phone poll after a live show on Sunday at 5.30pm.

The former Crompton Fold Primary School pupil said: "If I don't go, the band will lack a certain oomph. I just can't afford to pay for the ticket myself."

Steve was born on George Street, a stone's throw from Bolton Wanderers' former stadium, Burnden Park.

He moved to Sheffield when he was aged 11 but he watched his first match at Burnden Park in 1974 in a 1-1 draw against Carlisle United.

The show will be presented by Tess Daly, Terry Alderton and former England manager Terry Venables.

Dad-of-two Steve said: ''I want to win and I really need to win because most of the guys in the band are going but I have not got enough money to go.

"I play the bass line so if I don't go the Great Escape is going to sound a bit odd."

Steve has been following Wednesday since he was a boy and has been a season ticket holder since the late 1980s.

He has been home and away with England since 1996.

The England Supporters Band shot to fame during Glenn Hoddle's reign when the then England boss invited the boys to play during England games.

They even got to number 21 in the charts with the Great Escape and played on Ant and Dec's current World Cup single On The Ball.
