A £13 MILLION clean-up campaign is to be launched to improve the River Irwell's water quality in Bury.
United Utilities will boost treatment processes at its wastewater plant in Crossfield Street, Blackford Bridge, over the next two-years.
The scheme will see ammonia removed from the water and will cut the level of sewage by 75 per cent. It is hoped the project, part of a £3 billion North-west investment scheme, will provide a cleaner environment and boost wildlife levels.
Preliminary work has already started and, under the plan, wild grasses and flowers will be planted on disused land around the site.
