YOU will recall that on May 1, I printed a picture of a traction engine, not knowing where it had been taken or what the occasion was. Mr Alan Ralphs then rang me to say that it was in Musgrave Road, Bolton, as part of the Coronation celebrations in 1953.
I have now had a letter from Mr Mike Lowe, of Bradshaw Meadows, Bradshaw, who says he believes it to be a 1913 Burrell Showman's traction engine, registration CK3403, named "His Lordship".
"This engine was built for a Mr Green, a Glasgow fairground proprietor," he tells me.
"In 1932 it was acquired by Warrington fair proprietors Silcocks, and, I imagine, they would have brought it to Bolton with their funfair. It entered preservation via Tom Alberts of Bolton, which very likely explains why it was used in the local Coronation celebrations.
"The engine is now owned by Mr Gordon Atkinson of Scarborough, and it can be seen regularly at traction engine rallies - I have at least two photos of it taken recently at rallies."
