TWO photographs with uniform connections today . . . one shows Bolton's own bagpipe band back in 1937, on parade, with a strong team of drummers.
The caption for the other, in September, 1948, read: "Captain Douglas A. Pope, ARCM, director of music of the Coldstream Guards' Band, congratulating newly-married Mr and Mrs Kenneth Dawson, of Bolton, in Victoria-sq. Mr Dawson is an ex-Coldstream Guardsman".
There was more to it than met the eye, though. A separate story: "While the wedding reception was being held at the Town Hall, the band of Mr Dawson's old regiment played a selection of music in the square.
"Other members of HM Guards who would like a similar treat at their weddings must be warned, however - it was just a coincidence.
"The Coldstream musicians were here on a recruiting tour, paraded the town, played in the square, and gave a concert in the Victoria Hall. But Mr Dawson was thrilled to meet them, and so were the many Boltonians who thrilled to the sight of the red tunics, bearskins, and the sound of the stirring music."
