I OFTEN hear from people who have found old copies of the Evening News, and Mr Raymond Jarett, of Musgrave Road, Bolton, has rung to say that he has found one under the seat cushions of a second-hand suite! It is dated May 2, 1953 - and for the life of me, I cannot think of a reason for anyone to want to save that edition.
It was the day of the Bolton/Blackpool Cup Final at Wembley, which became known as the Matthews Final because in the last few minutes they turned a 3-1 deficit into a victory. Why, though, was it not known as the Mortensen Final, because he was the player who got a hat-trick?
I suggested that perhaps the Wanderers might be interested in the original paper to put in their Museum if they haven't already got it. That way, we Wanderers' supporters could go and have a regular weep . . .
