THE Bolton Evening News has often referred to the pleasure that Lever Park has given to so many local residents over the years.
The source of this pleasure can now be traced back for 100 years.
The Liverpool Corporation Act of 1902 established the Park "... for the use and enjoyment ... of the public for ever ..." and it has grown over that time as part of the public consciousness which does now demand that access to our beautiful countryside remains a right to be celebrated and protected, regardless of the issues of land ownership.
A group has recently been formed with people from Bolton, Horwich and Chorley, to work towards a Lever Park centenary event on August 4. This is the weekend before the actual date of the 100th anniversary.
The plans at present are for a programme to include bands and music, a service of re-dedication, and walks around and through the Park.
The group can be contacted through the Secretary on 01204 691833, or by e-mail at leverparkcentenary@bolton.tc
We would be particularly interested in hearing from individuals or groups wishing to showcase or promote their own interests and links with Lever Park as part of the programme on August 4.
