Holders shocked by 150-1 outsiders

HOLDERS France were on the receiving end of an opening day World Cup shock when 150-1 outsiders Senegal beat them 1-0.

Senegal, 10-1 to win Group A behind champs France, the odds-on group favourites and joint favourites to retain the trophy, took a shock 30th minute lead through Papa Bouba Diop and never really looked back.

The winning goal came after a defensive mix-up involving Petit and Barthez and ended with the Senegal hero flicking the ball home as he lay on the ground.

Bolton Wanderers' Youri Djorkaeff was picked to replace the the injured Real Madrid midfielder, Zinedine Zidane, and had a bright first-half including a powerful long distance free kick which was just saved.

He was substituted after 60 minutes but could look back on one of the few individual performances that were the mark of the champions.

Denmark and Uruguay are the other teams in the group.
