LANCASHIRE coach and Hart Common teaching professional Gareth Benson continues his series of 10 instructional lessons to help improve your game
Part 1 - Remain behind the ball
1. Create consistency, power and maintain your balance by feeling as though you are setting your left ear behind the ball at address and holding it there until well beyond impact. The "feel" you are looking for is of playing from a slight uphill slope.
2. When you reach the top of your backswing, the weight should feel as though it is placed firmly on the inside of the right foot with the left ear still behind the ball, even if you feel as though there has been a slight lateral movement of the head to the right.
3. With the energy and power all loaded and wound up in the backswing and safely stored behind the ball, feel the weight transferring on to your left side via the lower body as the arms and club drop down but continue to keep that left ear behind the ball.
4. It is only well beyond impact that the right shoulder automatically collects the chin on the through swing, lifts the head and moves it through to a balanced finish just ahead of the ball with the weight fully transferred into the left side.
