ROBBIE Keane hit an injury-time equaliser to earn the Republic of Ireland an amazing 1-1 draw with Germany, while USA beat Portugal 3-2 on a day of shocks in the World Cup.

Keane pounced after manager Mick McCarthy admitted his side had been "battered" by Germany, to earn a crucial point, which gives them a chance to reach the knockout stage.

And USA, 300-1 outsiders, stunned one of the tournament favourites Portugal in Suwon, by taking a 3-0 goal, then just hanging on for victory.

John O'Brien gave the USA a great start after four minutes, a Jorge Costa own goal added another, and then Brian McBride made it three after just 36 sensational minutes.

Portugal pulled one back through Roberto Luis Beto in the 40th minute and USA were forced on the defensive after the break as Portugal pressed forward.

The USA's Jeff Agoos then scored a freak own goal, volleying the ball into his own net, as Portugal fired forward in search of an equaliser which would revive memories of their Eusebio-inspired fightback against Korea in the 1966 World Cup.

But the USA held on valiantly to claim a fantastic opening game result.
